High, Medium or Low? Detecting Intensity Variation Among polar synonyms in WordNet
نویسنده
چکیده
For fine-grained sentiment analysis, we need to go beyond zero-one polarity and find a way to compare adjectives (synonyms) that share the same sense. Choice of a word from a set of synonyms, provides a way to select the exact polarityintensity. For example, choosing to describe a person as benevolent rather than kind1 changes the intensity of the expression. In this paper, we present a sense based lexical resource, where synonyms are assigned intensity levels, viz., high, medium and low. We show that the measure P (s|w) (probability of a sense s given the word w) can derive the intensity of a word within the sense. We observe a statistically significant positive correlation between P (s|w) and intensity of synonyms for three languages, viz., English, Marathi and Hindi. The average correlation scores are 0.47 for English, 0.56 for Marathi and 0.58 for Hindi.

Reducing False Positives in the Construction of Adjective Scales
Many adjectives that appear to be synonyms of one another differ in their intensity. Distinguishing the nuances between adjective synonyms is vital to linguistic understanding of a language, but WordNet currently does not encode the relative intensities of adjective synonyms that lie on the scale. Sheinman & Tokunaga (2009) proposed a solution of constructing Adjective Scales by data mining a w...
متن کاملSynFinder: A System for Domain-Based Detection of Synonyms Using WordNet and the Web of Data
The detection of synonyms is a challenge that has attracted many contributions for the possible applications in many areas, including Semantic Web and Information Retrieval. An open challenge is to identify synonyms of a term that are appropriate for a specific domain, not just all the synonyms. Moreover, the execution time is critical when handling big data. Therefore, it is needed an algorith...
متن کاملAutomatic Construction of Persian ICT WordNet using Princeton WordNet
WordNet is a large lexical database of English language, in which, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are grouped into sets of cognitive synonyms (synsets). Each synset expresses a distinct concept. Synsets are interlinked by both semantic and lexical relations. WordNet is essentially used for word sense disambiguation, information retrieval, and text translation. In this paper, we propose s...
متن کاملSynonymous Paraphrasing Using WordNet and Internet
We propose a method of synonymous paraphrasing of a text based on WordNet synonymy data and Internet statistics of stable word combinations (collocations). Given a text, we look for words or expressions in it for which WordNet provides synonyms, and substitute them with such synonyms only if the latter form valid collocations with the surrounding words according to the statistics gathered from ...
متن کاملAdjusting Word Embeddings with Semantic Intensity Orders
Semantic lexicons such as WordNet and PPDB have been used to improve the vector-based semantic representations of words by adjusting the word vectors. However, such lexicons lack semantic intensity information, inhibiting adjustment of vector spaces to better represent semantic intensity scales. In this work, we adjust word vectors using the semantic intensity information in addition to synonym...
